BAR Lab Members Present at Inaugural Meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana.

Mallorie Carrol, Asia Ashley, Hallie Jordan and Kray Scully presented research at the inaugural meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana. Carrol and Jordan presented work on the mediating effects of marijuana use motives in the relationship between PTSD and marijuana use outcomes. Ashley, Carroll and Scully presented on the mediating role of marijuana protective strategies in the relationship between PTSD and marijuana use outcomes. This work was part of the national Protective Strategies Research Team, a multi-university research group, that focuses on substance use and harm reduction among college students.

Whitley co-authors paper accepted for publication with BAR Lab Alum

Robert Whitley, a first year doctoral student in the BAR Lab, was a co-author on a publication with  Dr. Margo Hurlocker-Villarosa (a BAR Lab alumni) in the journal Addictive Behaviors. They found that students with more severe interaction social anxiety symptoms reported more fear of negative evaluation, which was related to more serious harm reduction strategies, which predicted fewer alcohol-related negative consequences. Congratulations!

Jordan and Carrol to Present at SEPA

Hallie Jordan, a second year doctoral student, and Mallorie Carrol, a third year doctoral student in the BAR Lab, had their poster accepted fore the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference. For their project The positive drinking consequences questionnaire: A four-factor model the used exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and invariance testing to further evaluate the Positive Drinking Consequences Questionnaire.

Scully Successfully Defends Thesis

Kray Scully, a third year doctoral student, successfully defended his master's thesis. He found that liquid courage and sexual enhancement alcohol expectancies predicted increased alcohol related negative consequences while using serious harm reduction protective behavioral strategies predicted decreased negative consequences. Congratulations Kray!

Jordan Successfully Defends Thesis

Hallie Jordan, a second year doctoral student successfully defended her thesis. She found that the link post-traumatic stress has with hazardous alcohol consumption was moderated by manner of drinking and stopping/limiting drinking protective behavioral strategies but only for men. She alcohol found that the link between post-traumatic stress and alcohol-related negative consequences was moderated by serious harm reduction protective behavioral strategies. Congratulations Hallie.

Dr. Margo Hurlocker participated in graduation this past Friday. She completed her Ph.D. in August 2017. Currently, Dr. Hurlocker is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions in New Mexico. Congratulations Dr. Hurlocker.

Hallie Jordan, a second year doctoral student in the BAR Lab, placed second in the Behavioral Sciences Category at the Southern Miss Graduate Research Symposium. She presented her thesis research where she found that protective behavioral strategies moderated the relationship between post-traumatc stress and alcohol outcomes. Nice job Hallie!

Carroll Defends Dissertation

Mallorie Carroll, a third year doctoral in the BAR Lab, successfully defended her dissertation today. She explored the degree to which hazardous marijuana use moderated the moderating effect of alcohol protective behavioral strategies on the relationship between hazardous alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences. She also examined the degree to which the link between marijuana use and marijuana consequences was moderated by marijuana PBS. Congrats Mallorie. 

Watson Places First at Research Conference

Tiara Watson, A junior psych major in the lab placed first in the behavioral sciences: Individuals at home, school and the workplace category at the Southern Miss Undergraduate Research Symposium. Her presentation is based on her Honors College Thesis. She found that greater maladaptive perfectionism predicted students engaging in more hazardous drinking and experiencing more alcohol-related negative consequences while greater adaptive perfectionism predicted less hazardous drinking, experiencing fewer alcohol-related negative consequences and increased use of protective behavioral strategies. Congratulations Tiara!

Scully Co-authors Paper Accepted for Publication

Kray Scully, a fourth year doctoral student in the BAR Lab, is first author on a paper accepted for publication in the journal Addictive Behaviors. The project was a psychometric evaluation of the Drinking Refusal Self-Efficacy measure with a sample of college students from the United States. Nice job Kray!

Jordan and Whitely Co-author Paper Accepted for Publication

Hallie Jordan, a third year doctoral student, and Robert Whitley, a second year doctoral student in the BAR Lab, are co-authors with Dr. Margo Villarosa-Hurlocker (BAR LAB alumnus) and Dr. Madson that was accepted for publication in the journal Assessment. The project involved an ROC curve analysis of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - US version in identifying at-risk college drinkers. Congratulations!
